The Shard-Stalker
The Shard-Stalker is a predatory creature that evolved in the post-Fracture ecosystem of Northern Velkaris to hunt the Pale-Touched. Fast, spider-like, and completely silent, it is drawn exclusively to the silver glow of moon-tainted veins and ignores all other living beings. The Pale Dominion considers it demonic a creature sent by Vel-Thara to harvest Yssara's saints. The Oathbound Remnants, characteristically pragmatic, follow Shard-Stalkers to locate Pale-Touched who need mercy-killing.
The Shard-Stalker does not hunt like an animal. It hunts like an instrument. It moves with a precision that suggests purpose rather than hunger each leg placed with mechanical exactness, each pause calculated, each shift in direction a response to something invisible to human eyes. It is the silver glow. The Stalker sees what humans cannot the vein-light of the Pale-Touched, visible through walls, through mist, through stone. A Pale-Touched in Stage Three or beyond radiates a signature that the Stalker can track from over a mile away. The creature does not need to see its prey. It follows the light the way a moth follows the moon, except this moth is eight-legged and silent and its arrival means death. The stalker's body is angular, chitinous, segments of pale grey that blend perfectly into frost-covered ruins. It has too many joints in its legs the angles are wrong, the movement uncanny. It does not click or scrape when it walks. The silence is deliberate, biological, a hunting adaptation so refined that a full-grown Shard-Stalker can cross a room of loose gravel without shifting a single stone. When it finds its prey, it does not attack immediately. It watches. It waits. The Shard-Stalker has no interest in a fight it wants certainty. It follows the Pale-Touched for hours, sometimes days, learning their patterns, until it knows the exact moment when the prey will be alone, still, unaware. And then it moves, faster than the eye can track, and the Pale-Touched's silver glow extinguishes forever. The Pale Dominion has declared the Shard-Stalker a demon, a direct agent of Vel-Thara sent to harvest Yssara's living saints. Dominion hunter-parties track and kill Stalkers whenever they are found. The Oathbound Remnants, who hold no such theology, have developed a different relationship with the creatures. They follow them. A Shard-Stalker always knows where the Pale-Touched are, and a Remnant who trails a Stalker at a safe distance will eventually find someone who needs naming. The arrangement is not cooperation the Stalker does not know it is being followed but it is useful. The Remnants call the Stalker the Remnant's Compass, and they pray it never learns to hunt them instead.
