Hollow Whisper

spell active Northern Velkaris
The Grief CallMourne's EarThe Sixty-Second Gift

Hollow Whisper is a spell that calls on Mourne the Hollow King, allowing the caster to speak with the recently dead for sixty seconds. The cost is severe a memory, permanently erased from the caster's mind, taken by Mourne as payment. The Hollow Covenant considers it sacred, used in deathbed rituals so the dying can swear their final oath. The Pale Dominion condemns it as necromantic heresy, a violation of Yssara's natural order.

Hollow Whisper is not a spell you learn from a book. It is a spell you receive passed from one caster to another in a moment of trust so absolute that both parties are willing to lose a memory for it. The teaching itself is evidence of the bond: the teacher casts the spell, speaks the secret into the student's ear, and the student loses sixty seconds of their life that they will never remember. The spell requires a corpse. The body must be present a name in the mist is not enough. The caster kneels beside the dead, places one hand on the chest where the heart used to be, and speaks the name of Mourne three times: once for the soul that left, once for the memory being offered, once for the sixty seconds to come. Mourne does not answer in words. The dead do. For exactly sixty seconds, the corpse speaks in its own voice, with its own mind, and the caster can ask anything. The cost is taken immediately. The caster feels the memory vanish a specific moment, a face, a place, a sensation, gone. They will not know what they lost until they try to remember it and find nothing. The memory does not fade. It is not suppressed. It is removed, as if it never existed, taken by Mourne into his collection. The Hollow Covenant uses Hollow Whisper as a deathbed ritual. A Greyvasti who has minutes left to live will cast the spell on themselves, using their own death as the anchor, and speak their final oath through Mourne. The Covenant believes this ensures the oath is heard and remembered. The Pale Dominion has a different view. They classify Hollow Whisper as necromantic heresy the first category in the Catalog of Prohibited Applications, the section the Tide-Weavers stole. The Dominion's position is that the dead belong to Yssara, not to Mourne, and any spell that treats death as a negotiation is an offense against the natural order.
