Moonblind
Moonblind is a weaponized moon-magic spell that floods the target's vision with raw lunar light, causing temporary or permanent blindness. It is a standard combat spell across Northern Velkaris the Oathbound Remnants use it for quick disengagement, the Pale Dominion teaches it as a non-lethal tool, and every mage knows how to counter it. It causes minor soul erosion in the caster with each use.
Moonblind is a crude spell, and its crudeness is the point. It does not require precision, finesse, or careful control. It requires a moon fragment, a line of sight, and the willingness to burn a small piece of your soul to blind someone else. The caster channels fragment energy through their palm and releases it as a focused burst of silver-white light. The effect is immediate and overwhelming the target's pupils contract to pinpricks, their vision floods with afterimages, and for several seconds they see nothing at all. An overcharged casting can burn the retina permanently, leaving the victim with two silver-white scars where their vision used to be. The Oathbound Remnants favor Moonblind for quick disengagement. A Remnant pinned behind cover will fire a burst of Moonblind into the open, sprint across while the enemy blinks silver, and vanish into the mist before anyone's vision clears. They do not use it to kill. They use it to survive. The Pale Dominion teaches Moonblind as a non-lethal tool. Dominion soldiers are trained to cast it at low intensity just enough to disable, not enough to burn. It is used during arrests, crowd control, and interrogations where a corpse would be inconvenient. The Doctrine of Controlled Erosion approves of this restraint: blindness is a controlled erosion of sight, a measured offering.
