Soul Tether

spell active Northern Velkaris
The AnchorThe First LessonThe Delayer

Soul Tether is the most common moon-magic spell in Northern Velkaris the first lesson every mage learns. It temporarily anchors the caster's soul to their body, slowing the erosion caused by moon fragment exposure. It does not stop erosion. It does not reverse damage. It buys time. Every mage in the region knows this spell. Every mage uses it daily. Every mage is still dying just slower.

Soul Tether is the first spell every mage in Northern Velkaris learns. It is not taught in a classroom it is taught by a parent, an elder, a senior Tide-Weaver, a scar-faced veteran of the Remnants who grabs the student's hand, presses a moon fragment into it, and says: feel that? That's your soul leaking. Now hold it still. The mechanics are simple. The caster visualizes their soul as a thread, one end tied to their body, the other fraying into the fragment's glow. The spell pulls the frayed end back and knots it temporarily. The knot holds for a few hours, maybe a day for experienced casters. While it holds, the fragment's erosion slows to a crawl. The caster can handle fragments, cast other spells, work through the night without advancing to the next stage. When the knot loosens, the erosion resumes at its natural pace. Soul Tether does not heal. This is the first disappointment every new caster faces. You cannot reclaim what you have already lost. You can only keep what remains. The Greyvasti elders teach the spell with a warning carved into the lesson: the tethered soul is still a leaking soul. You are only borrowing time, and the debt comes due all at once when the knot breaks. The Pale Dominion has a complicated relationship with Soul Tether. The Doctrine of Controlled Erosion teaches that erosion is sacred, that every fragment of soul offered to Yssara is an act of worship. To delay erosion is to withhold worship. The Arch-Seers have not outlawed the spell too many Dominion citizens rely on it but they preach against it, classifying it as a sin of weakness rather than malice. The faithful who use Soul Tether are encouraged to offer additional soul-fragments in ritual to compensate for the delay. Most do. The cycle continues.
